An Australian rail operator sought to move their current training for rail signallers to accredited training, as well as enhance their current program.

The Work

Instruction Design Australia (IDA) and Discover Learning Designs (DLD) initially conducted an assessment on the quality of the current training. Through this, IDA found the overall engagement of participants, the consistency of training delivery, and the effectiveness of the current training program could be improved.

In response to this, IDA restructured the organisation’s training model and enhanced the instructional design by incorporating hands-on, real-to-life activities designed around application of learning to encourage participant engagement and provide authentic learning experiences.

The instructional design and training materials balanced the operational needs of the organisation, whilst meeting the requirements and rigorous assessment of an AQF Certificate III in Rail Signalling qualification.

IDA worked alongside subject matter experts to create richly contextualised, user-friendly learning materials that detail the extensive knowledge requirements for the role.

IDA developed training guides to support both participants and On-the-Job Trainers during infield training to ensure that participants received an enriched learning experience, working within a supportive team environment.

The Outcome

A robust, sustainable learning and assessment system has improved consistent delivery of the program, as well as enhancing participant overall understanding and key skills, contributing to safe and efficient operation for this high-risk industry.
