The Kids Research Institute: Community in Practice case study

How we built Community in Practice, an interactive LGBTQIA+ health training program for future medical and psychology students. Designed for real behaviour change.

The client

The Kids Research Institute Australia is one of Australia’s leading child health research organisations, dedicated to improving the health, wellbeing, and development of children and young people. Working across a wide range of health and social issues, The Kids collaborates with researchers, clinicians, educators, and communities to drive meaningful, evidence-based change.

The challenge

Healthcare students often receive little formal training in LGBTQIA+ inclusive care, leaving future practitioners feeling underprepared or uncertain about how to respond. The Kids Research Institute identified an opportunity to bridge this gap with an engaging, evidence-based learning experience for tertiary-level medical and psychology students.

The program needed to meet learners where they were, from highly engaged students through to those who felt reluctant or unsure, and create a safe, structured pathway toward more inclusive healthcare practice.

Our approach

In partnership with The Kids Research Institute, we co-designed Community in Practice: LGBTQIA+ Health Training, a story-driven eLearning experience built for future medical and psychology professionals.

We created a vibrant community-scape: a custom-illustrated digital environment where learners navigate themed locations including Bedrock Bridge, Practice Park, Habit Hub, and Story Street. The program draws on stakeholder discovery to map the learning journey around real learner attitudes, motivations, and barriers.

Key features include lived experience videos from LGBTQIA+ community members, real-world healthcare scenarios, custom illustrations, and interactive assessments and reflective activities throughout.

The outcome

Community in Practice represents a meaningful step toward embedding LGBTQIA+ inclusive care into future healthcare education. The program equips medical and psychology students with the language, confidence, and practical skills needed to provide affirming care in real-world settings, moving learners beyond awareness and into action.

The project also strengthened the ongoing partnership between Hungry Minds and The Kids Research Institute, demonstrating the impact of co-design, thoughtful learning strategy, and human-centred digital experience in tackling complex social and healthcare challenges.
