How we built an engaging eLearning module for early childhood educators, practical frameworks, bespoke videos, and downloadable tools co-designed with The Kids.

The client

The Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) is one of the largest rail infrastructure programs in Victoria’s history, removing 110 level crossings across Melbourne by 2032. Through its Rail Academy, LXRP supports the Certificate II in Rail Fundamentals — a VET in Schools program giving secondary students an immersive preview of careers across Victoria’s heavy and light rail network.

The challenge

Communication development in babies aged 0–2 underpins health, relationships, learning, and behaviour. Yet early childhood educators often juggle varied tasks and routines, leaving little room for formal professional development. The Kids Research Institute identified a need to support educators in understanding how to observe, interpret, and respond to babies’ unique communication styles, in a way that was practical, accessible, and easy to embed into everyday practice.

Our approach

In close collaboration with The Kids Research Institute, we co-designed an eLearning module that transforms complex developmental concepts into actionable strategies educators can apply with confidence.

At the core of the course are two memorable frameworks developed with The Kids: GEMS (Gaze, Expression, Movement, Sound) and LEAF (Look, Expression, Activity, Feedback). These frameworks simplify key concepts and support their integration into daily routines.

The course features bright, engaging graphics, a conversational tone, and two professionally produced videos showcasing real-world interactions between educators and babies. Practical downloadable resources — including a Magic Moments Kit and a beautifully designed storybook — ensure the learning extends beyond the screen and into everyday practice.

The outcome

Learners praised the course during pilot testing for its relatable examples, engaging visuals, and actionable frameworks. Both the client and our team agreed the project was a genuine delight to collaborate on.

The course has strong potential as a cornerstone of professional development for early childhood educators across a range of care settings, complementing existing training initiatives and making a lasting impact on the babies in their care.
